1888 Melbourne Other Carlton 14 17 N/A GB 3 8 N/A As part of their longest overseas tour up to that point, Great Britain's rugby team agreed to undertake several of their matches - 19, as it turned out, although 20 were originally planned - according to 'Victorian Rules'.  The matches were an outstanding popular success, and the team performed much better than expected, particularly later in the tour once they had adjusted more to the idiosyncrasies of the foreign code.  The 20th match of this particular section of the tour, which was to have been against NSW club Newcastle, was cancelled after the tragic drowning of the GB captain, Robert Seddon, at Maitland.
