The carnival, which took place at the Brisbane Cricket Ground, was advertised
repeatedly in the 'Brisbane Courier'. The advertisement featured a player
lining up a place kick, with the caption "Come and see the game that
attracts thousands in the southern states". An article which appeared
before the start of the carnival reported that the chief objective of the
carnival was the "popularising of the Australian game in
Queensland". It added that the cost of the carnival was £3500.
Most of this would be borne as follows: £400 Victoria, £400 South Australia,
£400 Tasmania, £500 Western Australia, with the Australian Football Council
donating £1,480. Tim Lane, one of the best umpires of the day, would
umpire the matches. Admission for the games was a shilling per head, with
a seat in the grandstand costing an extra shilling. (I am wholly indebted
to Greg Parker and Ross Smith for this information.) Return
