The 1914 Sydney carnival was played with the threat of war in Europe looming. Consequently the series was afforded scant public attention and an excellent opportunity to bolster the game in New South Wales, where it was already undergoing something of a mini boom, was lost.
Queensland re-entered the fray in 1914 but lost all its games by heavy margins. New South Wales were the big improvers, emphasising the enhanced status of football in Sydney with convincing wins over both Tasmania and Queensland.
The matches involving the 'big three' were all highly skilled, spectacular affairs. The Vics won comfortably against South Australia and narrowly against the sandgropers while, in the best match of the carnival, South Australia ensured 2nd place with a thrilling 5 point victory over Western Australia.
