Only South Australia and the VFL made the long journey across the Nullarbor to join hosts Western Australia for the first post-war carnival in 1921. This led to a brief but extremely intense and hard fought series of matches.

In the opening game of the championships the umpire seemingly forgot his whistle as the VFL downed South Australia by 37 points, 11.12 (78) to 6.7 (43). The South Australians were awarded only one free kick all day, and many of the players would later look back on the game as the toughest and most uncompromising of their careers. The Western Australia-VFL clash was every bit as tough, with the sandgropers emerging victorious by 5 points. In the final minute of the game renowned Victorian spearhead 'Dick' Lee had a chance to win the game when he marked 40 metres from goal. As was his trademark, he carpeted the ball to attempt a place kick, only for a gust of wind to dislodge it; running forward he picked up the ball and attempted to side step the man on the mark, only to be dispossessed and see the ball cleared. It was the VFL's last scoring opportunity in the game. The last game in the carnival saw Western Australia clinch the title after making the most of their scoring opportunities to down South Australia by 10 points, 12.3 (75) to 9.11 (65). |
