Despite the VFL's continued dominance the 1927 Melbourne carnival was much more competitive than its predecessor. New South Wales performed creditably to defeat Tasmania by 3 points in a thriller, and were considered unlucky by some to go under to Western Australia after managing 33 scoring shots to 32. The fact that the Tasmanians themselves were no mugs was clearly demonstrated in their clash with the sandgropers when they succumbed by the narrowest of margins after a titanic struggle.
After their humiliations of three years earlier the Queenslanders, perhaps not surprisingly, opted to stay at home on this occasion.
