The 1933 Sydney carnival saw Canberra fielding a team for the first time. The most grateful state for this was Queensland, which after 20 consecutive losses in carnival games finally broke through for a win courtesy of the side from the Federal capital.

Other highlights included two titanic struggles between South Australia and Western Australia (both won by the croweaters), a solid series of performances by the host state which, with scores of 100 plus points in every game, ended up as the tournament's second highest scorers as well as the official 'minor grade' champions, and one of the highest standard matches ever seen in a carnival when the Vics downed South Australia by 15 points in a high scoring, fast-paced 'shoot out'. This led to high hopes that the carnival final between the same two sides would be a memorable one, but the Vics had other ideas and, in easily their best performance of the series, won with consummate ease. |
