Wingman Harold Jeffreys of East Fremantle, one of Western Australia's best players in its famous 4 point win over the VFL.

Despite near incessant heavy rain which turned the North Hobart Oval into a quagmire the 1947 carnival which, like that of 1908, was substantially played in two sections, produced some memorable football and attracted healthy crowds.  The undoubted highlight for Tasmanians was Western Australia's fighting 4 point victory over a strong VFL combination which constituted the Big V's first carnival defeat since 1921.  It was not enough to secure the title for the sandgropers, however, as they had earlier sustained a heavy loss to South Australia.  The croweaters' own 76 point capitulation to the Vics in the final game of the carnival saw the VFL retain the title on percentage.  Carlton centre half back and 1947 Brownlow Medallist Bert Deacon vied with Claremont's Les McClements as the outstanding players in section A.  McClements tied for the Tassie Medal with South Australian Bob Furler who represented Canberra in section B of these championships.

Furler's heroics were insufficient to prevent Canberra from claiming the section B (and hence the carnival) wooden spoon after heavy losses to both New South Wales and Tasmania and a narrow defeat after an atrocious display of kicking against Queensland.   Future Tassie Medallist Terry Cashion was the lynch-pin of the host state's triumph in section B and was also a prominent performer in the Tasmanian's battling loss to Western Australia in a challenge game.  As a result of its performances Tasmania was promoted to section A for the 1950 Brisbane carnival.

At the conclusion of the championships another challenge fixture saw a combined South Australia-Western Australia side defeat the VFL by 11 points in an exhilarating, high standard tussle.
