1958: The
VFL win section one of centenary interstate carnival in Melbourne, their eleventh
victory from thirteen attempts. Section two, held for third time, is won for
third time by Australian Amateurs. Record VFL home and away crowd of 99,346 sees
Melbourne defeat Collingwood at MCG on 15 June. Collingwood gain revenge in
grand final, winning 12.10 (82) to 9.10 (64), thereby preventing Melbourne from
equalling their own VFL record four premierships in a row. Port Adelaide win
fifth successive SANFL premiership. VFA grand
final ends in tie: Williamstown 6.15 (51), Moorabbin 7.9 (51). Replay sees
Williamstown 13.18 (96) overcome Moorabbin 8.16 (64). Dandenong

interstate match defeat to date, winning by 69 points in Adelaide, 14.15 (99) to
3.12 (30). Tasmania 13.13 (91) defeat the VFL 12.12 (84) in Launceston
