Individual Player Details - based on information supplied in the 'SA Football Budget', 7-11 June 1969

Coach: Ron Barassi (Carlton) - Aged 34, Victoria's dynamic 'Mr. Football' has ended an incredible playing career spanning 258 League games (208 with Melbourne, 50 for Carlton) and now has embarked on a coaching career that promises equal success.  He is one of the truly old hands in interstate football and realises what is necessary.  He has captained the VFL to its many successes in the past and last season guided Carlton to a VFL premiership to prove his ability as a coach.  (See footnote 1)

Peter Walker (Geelong - vice-captain)

26 184cm 85.5kg A state representative in 1966 and 1967.  Has played 140 senior games for his club.

Bob Keddie (Hawthorn)

23 185cm 82.5kg Hudson's 'right hand man' at Hawthorn.  Bob has played 67 games and kicked about 80 goals with Hawthorn since 1965.  Never previously selected for the VFL.

Kevin Bartlett (Richmond)

22 175cm 71kg A rover who played 80 senior games and kicked over 120 goals since 1965.  Last year he won his first state guernsey when he played against SA.

Darryl Gerlach (Essendon)

25 180cm 78kg Resting rovers have kicked few goals against him.  Darryl was his club's second best and fairest player in 1966 and played for the VFL in 1967 and 1968.

Bob Murray (St Kilda)

26 183cm 80kg Originally a full forward, Murray has played 94 senior games for the Saints.  Bob has played full back for the VFL for the past two seasons.

Ricky Watt (Collingwood)

22 184cm 82.5kg Last year he represented the VFL for the first time.  A natural left foot kick, Watt has played 70 VFL games since 1963.

David Thorpe (Footscray)

21 183cm 76kg Thorpe has played 60 senior games since 1965 as a wingman.  Possibly the best wingman in Victoria today.

Barry Bourke (Melbourne)

25 180cm 76kg Barry, who has played 90 senior games since 1963, is Melbourne's 'Jack of all trades'.  He represented the VFL in the 1966 ANFC championships.

Peter Bedford (South Melbourne)

22 178cm 76kg Played in the 1966 championships in Hobart for the VFA.  Bedford has played 29 games for South and starred in the centre and as a rover.  This is the first time he has won VFL representation.

Royce Hart (Richmond)

21 187cm 84.5kg Hart has kicked over 80 goals in 44 games for the Tigers and represented the VFL the past two years.  He is a National Serviceman and has obtained special leave to play in the current series.

John Newnham (Fitzroy)

26 170cm 73kg Has played 93 senior games and kicked over 70 goals in VFL competition.  A member of the VFL's team in the 1966 championships.

George Bisset (Footscray)

26 168cm 73kg In his seventh VFL season with Footscray.  His first time in the state team.  Has played 106 League games for the Bulldogs and kicked over 150 goals.

Alex Jesaulenko (Carlton)

23 183cm 82.5kg Hungarian born (sic.) Jesaulenko has kicked over 80 goals in 45 games for Carlton.  Has played for the VFL on three previous occasions.

Peter Steward (North Melbourne)

27 191cm 85.5kg Veteran of 101 VFL games, Steward missed nearly two complete seasons because of ruptured knee ligaments.  Last season he played centre half back for the VFL against WA.

Barry Davis (Essendon)

25 185cm 87kg Now playing his ninth season with Essendon.  Veteran of over 150 senior games.  He played for the VFL in 1967 and 1968.

John Newman (Geelong)

23 188cm 92kg Has played brilliantly in the ruck so far this season.  Newman has played 99 games for the Cats.  This is his first selection for the VFL.

Kevin Murray (Fitzroy)

30 178cm 82.5kg Veteran of 222 senior games for Fitzroy and 21 for the VFL.  This is his fourth championship series.  He captained WA in the 1966 championships and his All Australia selection was as vice-captain.  Kevin has captained the VFL.

Terry Waters (Collingwood)

26 188cm 85.5kg Now in his seventh season with Collingwood, has played 112 senior games and kicked over 150 goals.  Terry represented the VFL in the 1966 championships in Hobart.

Darryl Griffiths (St Kilda)

23 183cm 83.5kg Veteran of 94 senior games, 'Griffo' made his VFL debut as a full forward.  A member of St Kilda's 1966 premiership team he played on a half back flank against WA at the MCG in 1967.

Peter Hudson (Hawthorn)

23 188cm 82.5kg Has completed 49 games and kicked over 250 goals.  Last year he kicked 125 goals, a post war record.  Represented the VFL against SA and WA last season.

Sam Kekovich (North Melbourne)

19 187cm 98.5kg Playing as a ruck-rover, Kekovich has been a sensational inspiration to North Melbourne.  Sam has played 24 games since joining North last season.

Fred Way (South Melbourne)

25 196cm 92kg His 9 games this year has taken his total to 33.  First time he has been selected to represent his state.  Fred is an exceptionally high leaper for a big fellow and takes big marks in general field play.

Ross Dillon (Melbourne)

21 187cm 82.5kg Has played only 36 games in his 3½ seasons with Melbourne but, after two operations, seems to have completely recovered from the knee trouble which plagued him.
