Individual Player Details - based on information supplied in the official NFL Championship programmes

Coach:  Neil Kerley (Glenelg) - Neil 'King' Kerley is the volatile and outspoken mentor of the South Australians who calls on a wealth of experience both as a great player with 3 SANFL sides, and as coach, captain and player on many occasions with his state.

Kerley coaches as he played - tough, relentless and an at all times strong approach to the game.  he has a fierce and open hatred of Victorian sides.

He has been known as South Australia's 'Mr. Football' for many years, having played a total of 269 games with West Adelaide, South Adelaide, plus Glenelg in the SANFL, coaching these teams from 1961 to the present day, each for a flag win.  He has been an interstate player in 32 games and coach in many others.

Barrie Robran (North Adelaide)

26 188cm 83.5kg Ruck-rover.  Triple Magarey Medallist, the North and state captain is currently hampered by injuries, and is unlikely to be fit today.  Club's best and fairest 1968-69-70-71-72-73.  State player since 1967.
2

Michael Graham (Sturt)

22 168cm 73kg Half forward.  Explosive half forward who is a treat to watch, delighting with his freakish displays of uncanny ball control.  Having another great season.  Mike was a state player in 1973 and 1974.
3 (vs. Tas)

John McFarlane (Glenelg)

23 183cm 73kg Wingman.  Clever positioning and skilful ball handling win a ton of kicks for this determined wingman.  Although only slightly built, wins more than his share of hard balls.  Not previously represented South Australia.
3 (vs. VFL)

Phil Gallagher (Norwood)

20 175cm 70kg Wingman.  Made his state debut last year in Sydney.  Phil is a true champion, gifted in all facets of the game.  Delivers the ball beautifully, and reads the game to perfection.  Has played 5t0 League games.
4

Philip Nelson (Sturt)

28 188cm 87kg Centre half back.  Veteran of over 200 games, always seems to play well when he's needed.  Sure mark, and gives good rebound.  Has played previously for South Australia.
5

Greg Wild (Sturt)

25 193cm 89kg Ruckman,  Although he has played with injury in recent seasons, when fit Greg is an extremely clever, effective player.  Safe mark, and kicks well for goal.
6

Darrell Cahill (Port Adelaide)

26 178cm 75.5kg Rover.  South Australian representative at both football and golf, Darrell is a fine player in a variety of positions.  State representative 1973 (half back) and 1974 (rover).  Enjoying good form once again this season.
7

Peter Woite (Port Adelaide)

24 183cm 79.5kg Utility.  Currently 'burning' at centre half forward, last year he was impassable at centre half back.  Was best on ground in his state debut against the VFL in 1970 when he played on a wing, and will line up today at half back.  A most versatile player.  Sure and safe in all facets of the game.
8

Paul Bagshaw (Sturt - vice-captain)

28 185cm 82.5kg Ruck-rover.  'Mr. Magic' as he's known has been playing League football with Sturt since 1964, and in that time has had few peers as a run on ruckman.  Club's best and fairest in 1966, '69, '70 and '71.  State player every year between 1966 and '72.  Superb exponent of handball.
9 (vs. Tas)

Barry Stringer (North Adelaide)

24 185cm 76kg Wingman.  This spectacular left footer will make his state debut today after a 4½ year career with North, where he won the best and fairest award last year.  Fine mark, and prolific kick winner.
9 (vs. VFL)

Bruce Light (Port Adelaide)

26 180cm 80.5kg Wingman.  Livewire and a speedster.  Bruce was recruited from Waikerie in 1967, and has proved himself to be a valuable player in state games in the past.  Kicks well on the run with either foot.  Revels when the going gets tough.  Played 139 games.
10 (vs. Tas)

Ken Whelan (Sturt)

22 183cm 79.5kg Full forward.  Magnificent high flying full forward who relies a tremendous amount on his spectacular marking to gain kicks.  Not a great ground player.  Kicks fairly accurate flat punt shots for goal.  Booted 107 goals in 1973 and followed this up with 113 last year.  Last minute selection as 'Fred' Phillis was doubtful, and will make Tassie defenders go all out if he plays.
10 (vs. VFL)

Rod Seekamp (Norwood)

27 183cm 82.5kg Centre half back.  Superb anticipation and balance and magnificent long kicking make Rod an ideal attacking half back, the position he played in his state debut last year.  Playing well this season at centre.  Recruited from Renmark in 1970, and has played 100 games.
11

Greg Bennett (Glenelg)

26 174cm 71kg Rover.  Joined Glenelg in 1973, having played 96 games with East Perth.  Talented and consistent, Greg was unlucky to be 21st man for South Australia twice last year against the VFL and WA.

25 191cm 85kg Ruck-rover.  Joined Glenelg from Whyalla in 1967, and won club's best and fairest award in 1968, '72 and '74.  Sensational high mark, and controls the ball like a rover when it hits the ground.  Proving his value this year around the goals.
13

Michael Nunan (Sturt)

25 175cm 67kg Rover.  A busy little player, Mike will go anywhere to win a kick or, as is often the case, a handball.  Played a couple of games with Richmond while on a National Service posting in Melbourne in 1971.
14

Brian Colbey (Glenelg)

28 183cm 78.5kg Half back flanker.  All Australian in 1969 and a regular state representative ever since.  Sure footed, uncanny judgement and anticipation, 195 League games and rarely puts in a bad one.
15

Barry Norsworthy (Central District)

22 174cm 71kg Rover.  Barry makes his state debut today after a great season.  Wins plenty of kicks consistently and uses them to full advantage.  Has played 115 League games.
16

Bob Keddie (South Adelaide)

29 183cm 82.5kg Half forward flanker.  Joined Hawthorn in 1965, and won their best and fairest award in 1967 and 1969.  Represented the VFL and gained All Australian selection in 1969.  Joined West Adelaide in 1973 as captain-coach and then moved to South Adelaide in 1974.  South Australian representative in 1973 and '74.  fast moving, quick thinking half forward.
17

Rick Davies (Sturt)

22 191cm 87kg Ruckman.  State's most talented knock ruckman, what he lacks in size more than compensated for by tremendous leaping ability.  A brilliant high mark.  South Australian state player in 1973 and '74.  Runner up in last year's Magarey Medal.
18

Peter Carey (Glenelg)

21 196cm 95.5kg Ruckman.  With 91 games to his credit, Peter is a very mature and experienced 21 year old.  Graduated through the club's junior teams and made his debut in 1971.  State under 19 player.  Peter is a strong mark and surprisingly mobile for his size.
19

Colin MacVicar (Woodville)

24 192cm 98.5kg Ruckman.  Woodville stalwart, always seems to give his best.  A good body ruckman, an attribute which will help today in the all important ruck duels.  An awkward running and kicking action, but nevertheless effective.
20

Colin Casey (Sturt)

22 192cm 87kg Half back or full back.  Originally from Broken Hill, Colin is one of the state's most versatile players.  Club's best and fairest in 1972 as full back, and first won state squad selection in 1973 as a centre half forward.  Played for South Australia as a back pocket last year.  96 League games.
21

Russell Ebert (Port Adelaide - captain vs. VFL)

25 183cm 82.5kg Centreman.  The Port captain last year won his second Magarey Medal, and on form is a chance to win a third this year.  Beautifully balanced, strong mark, and kicks as well with either foot.  State player 1970-71-72-74.

22 (vs. VFL)

Max James (Port Adelaide)

23 183cm 80.5kg Full back.  The man in the team with today's toughest assignment - mind Alex Jesaulenko.  Max has played only a handful of games at full back, but has made a success of it.  Made his state debut in 1973 at full forward, and has played mainly as a ruck-rover.  High marking and pace are his main attributes.  Has played 90 games with Port.
23

Wayne Phillis (Glenelg)

25 191cm 91.5kg Centre half back.  Glenelg vice-captain, and like his brother, 'Fred', Wayne is a strongly built, powerful left footer.  A mean, solid and hard defender.  Has played for the state.  Another young veteran of over 170 games.
24

Ross Dillon (Norwood)

27 188cm 82.5kg Centre half forward.  Joined Norwood from Melbourne in 1973.  A brilliant mark, Ross has been in 'magic' form this season, and in one match kicked 8 goals.  Makes his debut for South Australia today, although he has played for the VFL (1969-70-71).
25

Michael Taylor (Norwood)

21 180cm 79.5kg Back pocket.  Michael makes his state debut today, although he was in the state '21 and under' side of 1973.  Club's best and fairest in 1973 and 1974.  Plays equally well as a rover, centreman and back pocket.
