Initially, the 1975 interstate football championship series was scheduled for Melbourne, but as this would have entailed an unthinkable week long hiatus in the VFL calendar, a compromise arrangement was concocted. Instead of a traditional 7 to 10 day carnival in which all participants played each other, the championships would be conducted on a knock-out basis, with 2 semi finals in Melbourne, and the final, 3 weeks later, at Football Park in Adelaide. Not surprisingly, the format attracted little public attention, all the more so when you consider that by this stage the strength of the VFL was such that interstate football had become depressingly predictable. South Australia and the VFL duly qualified to contest the championship decider after comfortable wins over Tasmania and Western Australia respectively, and while the South Australians fought hard in the final they were always inferior to a polished, well coordinated 'Big V' team which, to rub salt into the wounds, actually contained no fewer than half a dozen interstaters, including 2 croweaters.
