Right Half Forward Flank - Frank Dunell (Windsor-Zillmere, Essendon, Brisbane) |
|
|
|
Frank
Dunell was a highly versatile performer who enjoyed an 8 season, 99 game
VFL career with Essendon, followed by a
couple of seasons, and a further 15 games with Brisbane.
Initially used mainly at full forward by the Bombers he later migrated to
the wing before playing some of his best football in a forward pocket,
where he combined pace, aerial prowess and a keen goal sense. In
1983 he played in Essendon's reserves premiership team before experiencing
senior success the following year. He was also a member of the
Bombers' 1984 night premiership team.
On his return to his original club, Windsor-Zillmere, in 1988 he immediately tasted premiership glory once again as the Eagles overcame Southport in the QAFL grand final by 32 points. |

| A
classical centre half forward of the 'old school', Windsor's
Dick Parton was a superb aerialist and tremendous drop kick who acted as
the fulcrum of his entire team's forward line. In a war interrupted
career he was a member of no fewer than 8 Windsor premiership teams and
was a virtual ever present in Queensland interstate teams between 1937 and
1952. On one famous occasion he booted 9 goals in an interstate
match against arch rivals New South Wales.
As Parton's career went on he simply got better, as evidenced by his 1949 Grogan Medal win. As a youngster he preferred rugby league, but that code's loss was football's gain, and it is doubtful if Queensland football has ever witnessed a more imposing on field presence. |

Initially
renowned as a prototype of the new type of wingman who began to emerge in the 1960s, Des
Hughes was significantly taller than most of his opponents, and hence
regularly able to outmark them, but equally quick and no less skilled as
well. He was a major driving force behind Coorparoo's
success in the 1960s which saw the club win its first ever QANFL
premiership in 1960, and go on to contest 6 further grand finals for 3
wins over the course of the rest of the decade.
A regular Queensland interstate representative (15 appearances), Hughes possessed a prodigious leap and strong hands, and was often moved from his his wing to centre half forward if the team required a lift in that position. He played close to 300 QANFL games before retiring. |
