History:  Australian football appears to have been played in south-east Queensland as early as the mid-1860s, and within two decades there were approaching twenty clubs in existence in the area.  By the early 1890s, however, in the face of competition from rugby, and thanks at least in part to some disappointing showings in representative matches against VFA clubs, the sport appears to have virtually died out.  It was revived in 1903 with the establishment of the Queensland Football League (QFL) which continued, under various names, until 1999 when it went into voluntary liquidation, and was replaced by AFL Queensland.

I am indebted to Greg Parker and Murray Bird for providing me with accurate statistical and other information, such as club colours, for the QAFL's early years.  You can rest assured that any errors which remain are mine, not theirs.

The current AFL Queensland state competition is split into five divisions, as detailed below.  Also listed below are some former clubs of note. Clubs shown as hyperlinks currently have profiles on the site which you can navigate to via the links. Additional clubs will continue to be profiled over the coming months.

State League Division One: Broadbeach, Labrador, Morningside, Mt Gravatt, Redland, Southport, Suncoast Lions, Zillmere Eagles

State League Division Two: Aspley, Burleigh, Coolangatta, Maroochy-Northshore, Mayne, Noosa, Palm Beach Currumbin, Sandgate, Springwood, Surfers Paradise, Western Magpies, Wilston Grange
