Formed in 1961, Airport West began competing in the EDFL the following year, and have remained in the competition since. The club's first senior premiership arrived in 1978 in the short-lived A3 grade which ran from 1977 to 1985. A B grade flag followed in 1985 under the coaching of Bill Brewer, but it was the appointment of ex-Carlton player Des English as senior coach in 1992 that precipitated the club's greatest spell of success to date. English's arrival coincided with the emergence or recruitment of a large number of skilful, strong running footballers whom the 1981-2 VFL premiership star was able to mould into the dominant force in the competition. Recent performances have been somewhat less distinguished, however. In 2003, the Eagles succumbed to relegation from A Grade without winning a match, and since then they have tended to perform modestly, although they came close to qualifying for the finals in 2005 and again two years later.
