The club's first senior premiership arrived in 1978 in the short-lived A3 grade which ran from 1977 to 1985. A B grade flag followed in 1985 under the coaching of Bill Brewer, but it was the appointment of ex-Carlton player Des English as senior coach in 1992 that precipitated the club's greatest spell of success to date. English's arrival coincided with the emergence or recruitment of a large number of skilful, strong running footballers whom the 1981-2 VFL premiership star was able to mould into the dominant force in the competition. Under English, Airport West won its first A Grade flag in 1992, and immediately followed it up with another.. Recent performances have been somewhat less distinguished, however. In 2003, the Eagles succumbed to relegation from A Grade without winning a match, and since then they have tended to perform modestly, although they came close to qualifying for the finals in 2005 and again two years later.
