The Vikings have a long, illustrious history which has seen them claim numerous premierships at various grades in several different competitions. The club currently competes in division one of the Western Region Football League having achieved promotion after enjoying successive division two grand final triumphs in 2004 and 2005. They overcame Deer Park 11.14 (80) to 8.7 (55) in the former season and Glenorden by a hefty 69 point margin in the latter.

In 2008, under the coaching of Aaron Freeland, Altona endured a somewhat trying season, winning just 5 out of 18 matches to finish in eighth place on the ten team ladder.
