Formed in 1904, they engaged exclusively in social matches until 1914, when they joined the East Torrens Football Association. The club went into recess during world war one and re-emerged only sporadically between the wars. From the early 1940s onwards the Raggies enjoyed consistent success, claiming a total of seven A Grade ETFA premierships in just over two and a half decades. The 1969 season saw the ETFA merging with the North Adelaide Football Association to form the Norwood North Football Association. During the 1970s Athelstone was the dominant force in this competition, winning premierships in 1970, 1971, 1975, 1976 and 1977. In 1978 the Raggies were founder members of the South Australian Football Association, and they maintained unbroken membership of the competition until it disbanded at the conclusion of the 1995 season. They achieved their only senior grade SAFA premiership in the competition’s last year. Since 1996 Athelstone has competed in the South Australian Amateur Football League. The club’s senior team currently plays in division two, the grade in which their only SAAFL flag to date was won in 1996. Where now? or
