Name History: 1893-1907 Ballarat Football Association (BFA); 1908-33 Ballarat Football League (BFL); 1934-6 saw the Ballarat Football League and the Wimmera District Football League (WDFL), whilst technically retaining their own identities and autonomy, form a temporary partnership in order to conduct a competition known as the Ballarat-Wimmera Football League (BWFL); at the end of the 1936 season, this arrangement was dissolved, with the Ballarat Football League resuming its own competition in 1937 which, with the exception of two years during World War Two, has continued until the present day

# between 1934 and 1936 the Ballarat Football League joined with the Wimmera District Football League to conduct the Ballarat-Wimmera Football League. However, as both leagues retained their separate identities during this time, the premierships won by South Ballarat (1) and Ballarat Imperial (2) are included on the BFL's official honour board.
