BERRIGAN

Current Affiliation: Picola and District Football League (PDFL) since 2003

Formed: 1895

Colours: Black, white and red

Emblem: Saints

Senior Grade Premierships: Murray Football League (MFL) - 1934, 1936, 1965, 1968, 1980 (5 total)

Established in 1895, Berrigan competed initially in the Murray Border Football Association, and later in the Southern Riverina Football Association for a time. However, far and away the majority of the club’s existence to date was spent in the Murray Football League, in which it commenced in 1933. Success arrived swiftly as the side contested three straight grand finals between 1934 and 1936, emerging victorious from the first and last of these. Another losing grand final followed in 1939, after which the MFL went into recess for six years owing to the war.

The Saints’ first post-war grand final appearance did not occur until 1955 when they went down to Cobram by 36 points. Ten years later they claimed their third senior grade flag success courtesy of a 9.14 (68) to 9.6 (60) grand final defeat of Tocumwal. Another premiership followed in 1968 when Finley was bested on grand final day to the tune of 31 points.

The 1970s began and ended with grand final defeats at the hands of Numurkah, but did not produce any further flags. Berrigan’s fifth and last senior grade premiership to date was claimed in 1980 at the expense of Nathalia. The Saints have not contested a senior grade grand final since.

In 2003 Berrigan transferred to the Picola and District Football League in which, apart from a solid 2005 season, it has tended to struggle, at senior level at any rate. However, the under fourteen grade has performed consistently strongly, giving at least a modicum of hope for the future.
