Founded in 1932, Boronia experienced premiership success in the Mountain District Football Association at the second time of asking. After crossing to the Ringwood District Football League the club was quick to make its presence felt, reaching consecutive grand finals in 1938 and 1939. The 1938 match resulted in defeat, but the following year brought the club's second senior premiership. After the war the RDFL became known as the Croydon District Football League. Boronia struggled in the first few post-war seasons before improving to get as far as the preliminary final in 1948, and then taking out the premiership in 1949. The CDFL was replaced by the Croydon-Ferntree Gully Football League in 1950, and Boronia was a founder member of this competition, as it was twelve years later of the competition that grew out of it, the Eastern Districts Football League. Boronia has, to date, won a total of fourteen E(D)FL flags, including four at senior level. Nowadays nicknamed the Hawks, the seniors last went top in the 2000 season, thanks to an emphatic 2nd division grand final win over Blackburn. In 2007 the Hawks performed well to reach the grand final in division three only to fail to do themselves justice, and go down to Doncaster East by 64 points. Dean Grice's Edie Medal triumph afforded a measure of consolation. Where now? or |
