Brought into being as recently as 1991 by means of a merger between South Australian Football Association club Brighton, and Brighton High Old Scholars of the SAAFL, the Bombers have already enjoyed considerable success in their short life, and seem poised for more. In their debut season in the SAAFL they went top in both A3 and A8, and followed this up the very next year with promotion to A1 grade as losing A2 grand finalists. Since crossing to the SFL in 1997 the club has netted one more senior premiership. The Bombers' two antecedents both brought noteworthy, if contrasting, pedigrees to the marriage. Brighton was formed as long ago as 1885, and participated at various times in no fewer than ten different competitions. It spent the period between 1958 and 1968 in the SAAFL, winning three senior and two junior premierships at various levels. Perhaps its most famous player was Neil Hawke, who won the Hone Medal as the best and fairest player in A1 in 1961. Brighton High Old Scholars sprang into existence much more recently, in 1968, when "two youngsters in Paul Manuel and Doug Golley devised the idea of starting a football club as a means of playing without having to train" (see footnote 1). The club spent its entire existence in the SAAFL, where it enjoyed a modicum of success, but just as importantly developed a great social atmosphere and sense of camaraderie, attributes which Brighton District and Old Scholars have continued to manifest.
