BROUGHTON-MUNDOORACurrent Affiliation: Northern Areas Football Association (NAFA) since 1984 Formed: 1984 as a result of a merger between the Broughton and Mundoora-Wokurna Football Clubs Colours: Navy blue and gold Emblem: Eagles Senior Premierships: 1985-6, 1993, 1996-7, 2000, 2006 (7 total) Mail Medallists: Peter Sims 1988; Colin Ferne 1996; Mark Horner 2007 (3 total) With seven senior flags in the last two decades the Eagles have vied with Orroroo as the NAFA's most successful club. Prior to the merger, both Broughton and Mundoora-Wokurna had been stalwart members of the Broughton Football Association, which folded in 1979, following which they affiliated briefly with the Adelaide Plains Football League. Broughton-Mundoora's most recent senior flag was claimed in 2006 thanks to a hard fought 15.14 (104) to 13.17 (95) grand final defeat of Crystal Brook. The match, played in front of a sizeable crowd estimated to be in the region of 8,000 at Victoria Park, Jamestown, was close for three quarters, but the Eagles then booted the first 4 goals of the final term to establish a 32 point advantage. At that point it appeared game, set and match Broughton-Mundoora, but no-one told that to the Roosters who rattled on 5 quick goals without reply to leave the destiny of the premiership hanging in the balance with less than two minutes remaining. All the momentum was with Crystal Brook, but it was the Eagles who seized the initiative from the last centre bounce of the day, and a goal to burly ruckman Matt Gale almost on the siren made victory safe. The Eagles endured a dismal minor round in 2007 which produced just 7 wins from 16 matches, only good enough for fourth place on the ladder, but they had then found form with hefty finals wins over Southern Flinders and Crystal Brook to set up the teasing prospect of going 'back to back' at the expense of Orroroo in the grand final at Melrose. Straight kicking kept them in touch on the scoreboard throughout the match, but in the end it proved just one bridge too far for the Eagles, who went down by 10 points. Where now? or |
