Prior to becoming a founder member of the Southern Football League in 1993 Chelsea Heights had competed without success in the South West Gippsland Football League. The club commenced life in the SFL in division two, but soon succumbed to relegation. In 1995, however, it bounced back by claiming the division three premiership, and with it promotion back to division two. After four years of consolidation at that level the Demons progressed to division one on the strength of an 11.7 (73) to 6.11 (47) grand final defeat of Ashwood.

Since being promoted, the side has been competitive, qualifying for the finals every season between 2002 and 2005, and narrowly missing out in 2007 and 2008.
