Colonel Light Gardens has had four separate stints as a member of the South Australian Amateur Football League: in 1931 and 1932, from 1937 to 1941, between 1946 and 1975, and since 1986. The club has struggled to reach the higher grades but has usually boasted a large and enthusiastic player base.
