DEVON WELSHPOOL-WON WRON WOODSIDECurrent Affiliation: Alberton Football League (AlbFL) since 1997 Formed: 1997 as the East Coast Allies, following a merger between the Devon Welshpool and Won Wron Woodside Football Clubs; changed name to Devon Welshpool-Won Wron Woodside in 1998 Colours: Blue, red and white Emblem: Allies Senior AlbFL Premierships: 1998-9, 2003 (3 total) After finishing seventh (of thirteen clubs) in their debut season the Allies imposed themselves on the competition the following year when a crushing 87 point grand final defeat of Meeniyan-Dumbalk United earned them their first senior flag. Prior to the grand final, the Allies had had to do things the hard way after commencing their finals campaign with a narrow qualifying final loss to Yarram. A hefty 88 point win over Korumburra in the following week's first semi final restored the player's confidence, however, and when they again met Yarram in the preliminary final they were able to reverse the result of the previous encounter with some comfort. Then on grand final day the warmly favoured Demons had no answer to the Allies' all round brilliance. The 1999 season brought a second successive flag, and this one was procured with less trouble. Fish Creek provided the opposition in both the second semi final and the grand final, with the Allies romping home in the former match by 90 points after restricting the 'Roos to a paltry 1.3 (9) before proving only slightly less convincing in the second meeting, which they won 15.19 (109) to 10.10 (70). The Allies claimed a third senior premiership in 2003 but recent performances have been less meritorious. Last season, for example, produced just 4 wins from 18 games, only good enough for thirteenth place on the fourteen team ladder. Where now? or |
