Box 141, Doveton 3177, Victoria Colours: Brown and gold Emblem: Eagles Senior Grade Premierships: SFL Division Four - 1995 (1 total) St John’s Old Collegians, Doveton was formed in 1980, and competed in the Victorian Amateur Football Association between 1981 and 1994. The club altered its name to Doveton Eagles in 1990. The seniors contested the F Section finals four seasons in succession between 1985 and 1988, culminating in a losing grand final against La Trobe University and, with it, promotion to E Section. The side displayed consistently good form in E Section but consecutive third place finishes in 1992 and 1993 were its best finishes. The 1995 season saw the Eagles embarking on a new phase in their history by affiliating with the Southern Football League and claiming a division four premiership on debut. In 2001 the seniors reached a division three grand final, but lost to Tooronga-Malvern by a goal. The 2008 season saw the Eagles finish fifth in division three, thereby narrowly failing to qualify for the finals which they last contested in 2005. In 2010 the club was controversially ousted from the Southern Football League for allowing Barry Giddens to coach when he was under an AFL Victoria suspension for abusing umpires. The ban was lifted a year later, but much ill feeling was generated at the club and is likely to take some time to dissipate. Where now? or |
