The club competed initially in the Box Hill Reporter District Football League and would continue to do so until 1914, claiming successive premierships in 1912 and 1913. Between the wars Ferntree Gully competed at various times in three different competitions, in all of which it won at least one flag. It went top in the Mountain District Football League in 1922, the Scoresby District Football Association in 1925 and 1926, and the Dandenong District Football Association. After world war two the club continued to compete in the DDFA and added a second premiership in the competition in 1949. The following year saw the Kangaroos as they were nicknamed at the time transferring to the Croydon Ferntree Gully Football League where they remained for seven seasons before embarking on a four season stint in their old stamping ground of the MDFL. It proved to be a highly successful four years as the club enjoyed back to back premiership success in 1960 and 1961. Since 1963 Ferntree Gully has competed in the competition known today as the Eastern Football League, and originally as the Eastern District Football League. Over the years the club has competed in all four of the competition’s divisions, winning senior grade flags in division two in 1968, and division three in 1987. At the end of the 1995 season the club, which recently assumed a new nickname, the Eagles, was relegated to division four where it has remained since. In 2008 the seniors finished seventh on the ten team ladder with a 6-12 win/loss record and the reserves also failed to qualify for the finals. The colts, however, came within 4 points of a premiership after losing in the grand final to Chirnside Park. Overall, Ferntree Gully’s reserves have a good record in the E(D)FL with a total of four flags, all in division two, to their credit. The colts meanwhile have yet to open their premiership account.
