The club was at its peak during the early 1970s when it competed strongly in A1 grade. However, within a decade the club had plummeted down the grades and was struggling to recruit sufficient players. In 1981 it went into recess for a season, and when it resumed the following year it began to draw some of its players from the neighbouring Sturt Advanced College of Education, which had disbanded its own amateur football club at the same time as Flinders University. With a broader pool of players available to them, the Double Blues have survived, and if the heady days of the early 1970s have yet to be revisited there seems no reason to doubt that, given time, they will be.
