Geelong Amateur Football Club was formed in 1926 by students and teachers from Geelong College and Geelong Grammar School. The club commenced in the Metropolitan Amateur Football Association's B Grade competition the same year, earning promotion to A Grade in 1931 thanks to a 14.8 (92) to 9.16 (70) grand final defeat of Old Paradians. Its initial stint in the top echelon was fleeting, and the 1933 season saw it back in B Grade.
That same 1933 season saw the MAFA renamed the Victorian Amateur Football Association. Geelong Amateur would remain affiliated with the VAFA until 1983, when it crossed to the local Geelong and District Football League. Its record in the VAFA was creditable, with most of its time being spent in either A Section or B Section. The senior team's highest ever finishing position was third in A Section which it managed twice, in 1935 and 1936. Its four senior M/VAFA flags comprised three in B Grade and one in C Grade.
The club's involvement in the GDFL began promisingly and within three years it had earned promotion to the much stronger Geelong Football League where it performed solidly until 1988, when it succumbed to relegation back to the GDFL.
Since 1995 Geelong Amateur has competed in the Bellarine Football League. So far, the senior side has qualified for the grand final twice, losing by 9 points to Ocean Grove in 2003, and gaining revenge the following year by almost 8 goals.
