Home Ground: Baker’s Oval

Club Address: Shannon Avenue, Geelong West 3218, Victoria

Senior Grade Premierships: Geelong Football Association (GFA) - 1935 (1 total); G&DFL Evelyn Hurst Trophy - 1966, 1971 (2 total); Division Two - 1978, 1987 (2 total); Jarman Cup - 1956 (1 total)

Originally known as Geelong West Cricket and Football Club the Cheetahs have been features of the Geelong sporting landscape since the 1930s. Their first premiership was claimed in 1935 in the Geelong Football Association when they accounted for Geelong Guild Scouts in the grand final by 15 points. They reached a second grand final four years later, but went down to East Geelong by 6 goals.

After world war two the club competed in the Geelong and District Football League, initially for the top tier Evelyn Hurst Trophy, in which it reached a grand final in 1946, only to lose by 20 points to East Geelong.

During the 1950s the club began to find the going tough, tumbling down the grades to the second tier Woolworth Cup, and then to the third tier Jarman Cup, from which it achieved promotion in 1956 when it overcame St Mary’s Seconds in the grand final by 11 points. The following season saw the Cheetahs reach the Woolworth Cup grand final, losing to North Geelong Seconds by a point. This was nevertheless good enough to secure promotion to the GDFL’s top tier, the Evelyn Hurst Trophy.

Over the last half century the Cheetahs have added four more senior grade flags to their tally. The first two of these, in 1966 and 1971, were in the Evelyn Hurst Trophy, while more recently the club tasted success at division two level in 1978 and 1979. When the Geelong Football League broke away from the GDFL in 1979 Geelong West Cricket and Football Club was a foundation member of the new competition. However, in 1987 it resumed in the GDFL, where it has remained ever since.

Recent years have seen the Cheetahs struggling near the foot of the premiership ladder, with the 2007 season bringing the ultimate indignity of a winless wooden spoon.
