After losing the new competition’s inaugural grand final by 8 points to Houghton Gumeracha claimed its first premiership the following year with a 9.9 (63) to 4.8 (32) grand final defeat of Tweedale. All told, the Magpies had won a total of a dozen senior grade TVFA flags by the time they transferred to the Hills Football League’s Northern Zone in that competition’s first season of 1967. Gumeracha has continued in this league, which became known as the HFL division two in 1972, ever since. To date, it has qualified for half a dozen senior grade HFL grand finals, winning in 1970 against Williamstown, 1982 against Mt Torrens Cambrai and 1984 at the expense of Nairne Bremer. Recent seasons have, in the main, been something of a struggle for Gumeracha whose seniors managed just 2 wins in both 2006 and 2008, while in 2007 they slumped to the ultimate indignity of a winless wooden spoon. The 2009 season brought significant improvement as the Magpies qualified for the finals in fifth place although they were unable to counter the elimination final challenge of Nairne Bremer United, which won a fiercely fought encounter by 20 points.
