A Heidelberg team was competing informally against local opposition as early as the 1870s, but the club’s competitive history did not commence until 1890 when it was a founder member, and inaugural premier, of the Bourke Evelyn Football League. When the Victorian Football Association ran a second tier competition between 1900 and 1902 Heidelberg was among the member clubs. In 1903 the club commenced in the Northern Suburbs Football League, claiming premierships in 1905 and 1908, before becoming a foundation member in 1909 of the Heidelberg District Football League. Between 1910 and 1912 Heidelberg won a hat trick of flags, and added a fourth when the competition resumed after the Great War in 1919.

The 1922 season saw the establishment of the Diamond Valley Football League, which Heidelberg joined the following year, and in which it enjoyed immediate premiership success. During the inter-war years the club was a leading force in this competition, adding further flags in 1928, 1929, 1937 and 1938. Heidelberg continued to compete in the DVFL after world war two, and its pre-eminence was consolidated with victories in the grand finals of 1948, 1950, 1956, 1957, 1959 and 1964. In both 1950 and 1957 the club had double cause for celebration as its reserves team also went top.

After their 1964 success the Tigers endured a premiership drought lasting almost two decades. In 1981 the DVFL split into two divisions, and when the drought was finally broken in 1983 it was by means of a division two grand final triumph against Northcote Park. This remains Heidelberg’s only division two flag win.

Over the ensuing couple of decades or so the Tigers resumed their status as one of the DVFL’s pre-eminent forces, adding another four grand final victories, all in division one. Their dominance continued when the DVFL was replaced by the Northern Football League in 2007 as they defeated Bundoora by 32 points in the competition’s inaugural division one grand final. The following year they repeated their success, this time at the expense of Montmorency by a margin of 22 points. In both seasons the club’s B Grade side also won the premiership. The 2009 season brought a third straight grand final triumph for the senior grade side which comfortably overcame Bundoora by 64 points, 19.17 (131) to 10.7 (67).

Heidelberg again qualified for the division one grand final in 2010, and entered the match against West Preston as favourites. However, despite looking fairly comfortable for much of the first half, at the end of which they led 7.6 (48) to 5.1 (31), the Tigers were overrun after the long break, managing just 2 goals to 8 to go down by 21 points.
