Placed in A3 Grade when it joined the SAAFL from the North Adelaide District competition Kilburn qualified for the final in its debut season, ultimately finishing third, and followed that up by winning the flag in 1959. The 1960 season brought a second successive premiership, this time of A2 Grade, meaning that within a couple of seasons the club had earned promotion to the SAAFL’s top grade. It enjoyed a fine first season in A1, reaching the grand final in which it went down by 28 points to Adelaide University. Kilburn also did well in 1962, finishing third, but after that the side began to struggle. After narrowly escaping relegation in both 1963 and 1964 it succumbed to the drop in 1965 and it would be another fifteen years before the club again experienced A1 Grade football. During those fifteen seasons the club alternated between A2 and A3 Grades, winning premierships in the latter in 1969 and 1977, and in the former in 1978. Between 1979 and 1984 the Magpies competed in A1 Grade, with third place in their first and third seasons the closest they came to securing a premiership. Following a three season stint in A2 Grade Kilburn was back in A1 in 1989 and the greatest era in the club’s history was underway. Over the next dozen seasons the Magpies would play off for the A1 Grade premiership on five occasions, winning in 1994 at the expense of Port District, 1995 against Broadview and 2001 against Adelaide University.
