LONGWOODCurrent Affiliation: Benalla and District Football League (BDFL) Home Ground: Redleg Stadium Colours: Blue and red Emblem: Redlegs Senior Premierships: Euroa District Football League (EDFL) - 1906, 1908, 1924, 1934-5-6 (6 total); Hume Highway Football League (HHFL) - 1953 (1 total); BDFL - 1977, 1985, 2000 (3 total) The Redlegs have been winning premierships for over a century now, having claimed their first in 1906 in the Euroa District Football League, the competition the club was to call home for almost half a century. A second premiership followed in 1908, but it was between the wars that Lockwood really began flexing its muscles. The 1920s brought five grand final appearances, but only once, in 1924 against Euroa Imperials, were the Redlegs successful. The following decade brought one fewer grand final appearance but a much better strike rate as the side won three of them. In 1950 Longwood crossed from the EDFL to the Hume Highway Football League where it would spend five seasons. The club was a force to be reckoned with during this time, qualifying for grand finals in 1951 (lost), 1953 (won) and 1954 (lost). The opposition on all three occasions was provided by Strathbogie. The Redlegs' current home, the Benalla and District Football League, has seen them achieve premiership success on three occasions, in 1977, 1985 and 2000. The Redlegs have a good record of contesting finals, but once there things have often not gone their way. A case in point is provided by their record of dropping out of premiership contention at the preliminary final stage in each of the past three seasons. They were particularly unfortunate in 2007 when, despite managing 6 more scoring shots than opponents Bonnie Doon, they went down by 4 points. Where now? or |
