MAFFRA

Current Affiliation: Gippsland Football League (GFL) and precursors since 2002

Colours: Black and red

Emblem: Eagles

Senior Grade Premierships: Gippsland Football League (GFL) - 1904, 1906-7, 1910, 1914, 1920-1, 1936, 1935, 1938, 1946, 1948 (12 total); WGLFL - 2003-4, 2006-7, 2009-10 (6 total)

The West Gippsland Latrobe Football League has only been in existence since 2002 and so far Maffra is one of just four clubs to have claimed senior grade premierships. Moreover, the Eagles are the only multiple premiers, having won six out of the seven grand finals in which they took part. The triumphs were achieved at the expense of Wonthaggi in 2003, Leongatha in 2004, Sale in both 2006 and 2007, Traralgon in 2009, and Drouin in 2010. The sole grand final loss was sustained in 2005 at the hands of Traralgon.

Maffra’s recent success is somewhat surprising given that, prior to commencing in the WGLFL, the club had gone more than half a century without winning a single senior grade flag. Indeed, between 1949 and 2001 the Eagles only contested one senior grade grand final, which they lost by a couple of points to Leongatha in 1989. That loss occurred in the La Trobe Valley Football League, in which Maffra competed between 1960 and 2000. Prior to 1960 the club had been affiliated with the Gippsland Football League since shortly after the turn of the century. During its first four decades of involvement it had enjoyed regular success, claiming a total of a dozen premierships between 1904 and 1948, a record unmatched by any rival club.
