Formed in 1894, the Mersey Football Club competed with success (seven premierships) in the North West Football Association prior to becoming a founder member of the North West Football Union in 1910.  The club reached a grand final in its debut season, but lost to Ulverstone.  It then beat Latrobe 7.8 (50) to 1.9 (15) in the 1911 grand final, and Ulverstone 2.8 (20) to 1.7 (15) in the following year's play-off.  Its final season in the NWFU was 1915.
