Monash Gryphons Amateur Football Club was formed in 1991 by members and associates of the Chisholm Institute of Technology Staff and Student Union.  It entered a single team in the VAFA's G Section the same year.  In 1994 a reserve team was added.

The Gryphons have twice achieved promotion as a losing grand finalist: in F Section in 1998, when they lost by 21 points to Hawthorn Amateurs, and in 2003 in D3 Grade when they were beaten by Swinburne University by 89 points.

They claimed their first senior grade premiership in 2010 in division four. Opposed in the grand final by Mount Lilydale they entered the final term with scores deadlocked on 54 points apiece. However, the Gryphons finished full of running to pull away and win comfortably by 16 points, 13.12 (90) to 11.8 (74).
