It entered a single team in the VAFA's G Section the same year. In 1994 a reserve team was added. The Gryphons have twice achieved promotion as a losing grand finalist: in F Section in 1998, when they lost by 21 points to Hawthorn Amateurs, and in 2003 in D3 Grade when they were beaten by Swinburne University by 89 points. In 2006 the senior side, coached for the second successive year by former club captain and dual best and fairest winner Steve Bourbon, won 5 out of 18 games to finish 8th in D3 Grade. Meanwhile the reserves reached the grand final only to suffer a heart-breaking loss by the narrowest of margins. The 2007 season produced a similar result for the seniors, who avoided relegation to D4 Section only on percentage, while the reserves plummeted down the list to 7th after managing only half a dozen victories for the year.
