North Ballarat City provides the famous North Ballarat Football Club with a continuing presence in the competition which has been its traditional home, the Ballarat Football League. It also forms part of a systematic conduit from junior grade football, through BFL senior grade and on to the VFL. The current phase of its history commenced in 2006 when the club fielded a team in the Bendigo Football League. After a couple of seasons in that competition the side returned 'home' to the BFL.
