A founder member in 1961 of the Great Northern Football League, Northampton had, prior to that, been involved at different times in both the Geraldton National Football League and the Northampton-Upper Chapman Football Association.
After the Rams first couple of decades in the GNFL, during which they won five senior premierships, including a record equalling three in succession during the 1970s, they found success much harder to come by. Finally, however, they broke through for a sixth flag in 2004.
