Formed:  1909

“A meeting of delegates from Crystal Brook, Laura, Gladstone and Jamestown Football Clubs met at Gladstone on 16th April, 1909, with the view of forming an association, to be named the Northern Areas Football Association. At a subsequent meeting on 21st April rules, regulations and a programme of matches for the 1909 season were discussed and confirmed.”  (From John Glistak’s book, “Jamestown (Jamestown-Appila) Football Club 1882-1982)

As a result of changing social patterns and declining district populations, Crystal Brook is the only foundation club still competing in the Northern Areas Football Association in its own right. Jamestown merged with Appila in 1972 to become the Jamestown Appila Football Club, and more recently with Peterborough to be known as Jamestown-Peterborough. Laura merged with Wirrabara in 1972, the same year that Gladstone merged with Georgetown-Caltowie to become Gladstone Combine. More recently, these two combined clubs have in turn combined to become the Southern Flinders Football Club.

(Note: In the case of both of Jamestown’s mergers, in 1972 with Appila, and in 2003 with Peterborough, Jamestown was the senior partner in the merger, and in reality the change of name of the club was largely to protect the identity of the smaller merger partner.)

The geographical area covered by the Northern Areas Association has expanded greatly since it’s formation in 1909 – indeed, much of the area covered by now defunct neighbouring leagues such as the Flinders League and the Broughton League are now represented by clubs in the present day Northern Areas Association. Booleroo-Melrose-Wilmington (commonly abbreviated as BMW) is a combined entity, the individual towns of which had a substantial history of football in the Flinders League, as did Orroroo. Broughton-Mundoora is a combined entity of Port Broughton and Mundoora-Wokurna, both of which played in the former Broughton League.

Crystal Brook have won 16 A Grade premierships in the Northern Areas Association, more than any other single entity. Supporters from Jamestown have had much to cheer about though, celebrating a total of 20 flags – 12 of which were won by the Jamestown Football Club, 6 as Jamestown-Appila, and a further 2 as Jamestown-Peterborough. A barracker from Georgetown could lay claims to 16 premierships – 13 to Georgetown, 1 as Georgetown-Caltowie, and 2 as Gladstone Combine.
