Right Back Pocket - Reg Garvin (Newtown, St Kilda, Prahran)

A member of New South Wales’ 1933 Sydney carnival team follower Reg Garvin won the Phelan Medal with NSWANFL premiers Newtown in 1936 before heading for the ‘big time’ with St Kilda the following year. As a fireman Garvin had little choice but to remain in optimal shape physically and this probably helped him to compensate for any deficiencies in skill resulting from his late start in the game. As a youngster in Sydney he had played soccer and rugby but, in common with most of his compatriots, regarded Australian football as a ‘foreign’ sport. Once exposed to it, however, his determination, toughness and vigour quickly yielded dividends and he ultimately took to the hurly burly of VFL football as though born to it. Indeed, so thoroughgoing was his assimilation that he was appointed captain-coach of the Saints in 1942, a position he held for two years. He was also a VFL interstate representative and winner (in 1944) of St Kilda’s club champion award.

After 129 games with the Saints Reg Garvin finished his senior career with Prahran in 1947.

Full Back - Anthony Daniher (Sydney & Essendon)

One of 4 Daniher brothers to play VFL football Anthony Daniher was originally recruited by South Melbourne as a wingman but soon developed into a champion full back.  Daniher continued to play for the Swans when they controversially re-located to Sydney in 1982 and all told he played a total of 115 games for the club over the course of 6 seasons.  In 1987 he joined brothers Chris and Terry at Essendon and over the next few years he played probably the best football of his career culminating in selection in the inaugural AFL All Australian team in 1991.  An excellent mark and a booming kick - often utilising the by this stage somewhat unfashionable torpedo punt - Anthony was the tallest (at 191cm) and heaviest (90kg) of the Danihers; along with Terry he achieved membership of the League's '200 Club', and together with all 3 of his League football playing brothers he represented New South Wales in state of origin football.

Left Back Pocket - Troy Luff (Sydney, Balmain, UNSW-Eastern Suburbs)

Recruited from Nelson Bay, Troy Luff made his senior AFL debut with Sydney in 1990.  An excellent high mark, he was also extremely quick, making him more than capable of holding down a variety of positions.  However, it is probably as a strong marking, rebounding defender that he played his most impressive football, and is best remembered.

Selected on a half forward flank in Sydney's 1996 grand final team Luff booted 2 goals and was one of the Swans' best in their 43 point loss to North Melbourne.

After quitting the AFL Luff joined Balmain and won a Phelan Medal and club best and fairest award in 2002.  He also coached the club from 2002 to 2004.

In 2005 Troy Luff embarked on a new phase of his career when he was appointed playing coach of UNSW-Eastern Suburbs.  He continued to perform with considerable effectiveness as a player, and in 2006 his fine form was rewarded with a second Phelan Medal.
