Over the years, three different clubs bearing the name of Oakleigh have participated in the VAFA.  Between 1908 and 1911, when the competition was known as the Metropolitan Junior Football Association, it was home to an Oakleigh club that would later compete, with a fair amount of success, in the VFA.  It did not have an easy time of it in the MJFA, however, losing far more matches than it won, including all 18 in its final season.  In 1927-8 another Oakleigh team joined the Association, which by this time had replaced the word 'Junior' in its title with the word 'Amateur'.  This particular Oakleigh team was known as Oakleigh Amateurs, both to emphasise its status, and to distinguish it from the original Oakleigh team which was on the verge of transferring from the Sub Districts Football League to the VFA.  Oakleigh Amateurs proved to be no more successful than their predecessors, and indeed the club was more renowned for the infamous behaviour of its supporters than for its on-field prowess.  After one complaint too many about the abuse and even outright physical violence to which both umpires and visiting teams were subjected when they played at Oakleigh, the club was expelled from the Association.

The third VAFA club to carry the Oakleigh banner began life in 1991, and won a premiership in only its third season.  Opposed by Yarra Valley Old Boys in the F2 Section grand final, Oakleigh won convincingly, 17.17 (119) to 9.5 (59).  The following season saw the same two sides contesting the F Section grand final, but on this occasion it was Yarra Valley who prevailed.

Oakleigh's three most recent grand final appearances have both been successful.  In D3 Grade in 2004 the side over came Rupertswood by 9 points; in 2006, in D2 Grade, Peninsula Old Boys were on the wrong end of a 67 point hiding; and in the 2007 D1 Section grand final Oakleigh triumphed over Hampton Rovers by almost 11 goals.
