Ten years later a second application was accepted, and the side took its bows in E Section, where it remained until 1971 when it was relegated to F Grade (see footnote 1). This ostensible misfortune seemed to serve as a stimulus, for the side immediately embarked on a slow but steady ascent through the grades which took in premierships of F Section in 1972, D Section six years later, and C Section in 1982. To date, Old Camberwell has never progressed beyond B Grade, and indeed has yet to contest a finals series at that level. The heady years of the 1970s and early 1980s were followed by a comparative decline in fortune, which saw the side drop as low as E Section for a time in the 1990s. The club's most recent senior flag was won in 2001 in D1 Grade thanks to a 10.13 (73) to 7.15 (57) grand final defeat of Banyule. Since then, the team has competed in C Grade, reaching the finals in 2005, missing out by half a game in 2006, and then storming to the premiership - its second at this level - in 2007. Where now? or Footnotes1. The VAFA first introduced an F Section in 1964, but after just two seasons it was dispensed with. In 1971 it was reintroduced following a growth in demand for membership from prospective new clubs. Return to Main Text |
