Commencing in F Section, the senior side found the going difficult at first, but the reserves fared well, winning a premiership in their second season. As the nineties progressed, so the performances of the senior team improved. In 1996, in E South Section, the side contested the finals for the first time, eventually finishing 4th, and the following year brought a losing grand final appearance against Southbank. The club dropped the "St Patrick's" from its name in 2000 to become known as Mentone Amateur Football Club. Mentone's first senior VAFA flag was secured in quite superb fashion in D2 Grade in 2001 as the side won every match of the season culminating in a 12.18 (90) to 9.7 (61) grand final defeat of Williamstown CYMS. The 2002 season brought a second successive promotion thanks to a narrow D1 Grade grand final loss to Emmaus St Leo's. The club underwent a second name change in 2004 when it became known as Parkdale Vultures. The seniors have competed in C Section since gaining promotion and in 2006 got as far as the preliminary final, where they were beaten by eventual premiers St Bede's-Mentone Tigers. A year later, however, they slid down the ladder to 7th place after winning just half a dozen of their eighteen matches for the season. Where now? or |
