The Rams spent their first couple of seasons competing in the Sydney District Football Association's reserve grade.  They finished 3rd in 1981 and 2nd in 1982, with Keith Claxton winning the competition best and fairest award, the McFarlane Medal, both years.

Penrith was accorded senior status in 1983, and competed initially in the SDFA, which was incorporated into the Sydney Football League as its 2nd division in 1987.  That 1987 season saw the Rams contesting their first ever senior grand final, but they lost to Liverpool.  The 1988 season ended in identical fashion before Penrith made it third time lucky with a thumping 14.5 (89) to 5.8 (38) grand final trouncing of Auburn in 1989.

The Rams teams of this period were undoubtedly their most powerful to date, and 3rd place in 1990 was followed up by another flag, this time as champions, in 1991.  Further grand final appearances followed in 1992 against Bankstown and 1993 against Hawkesbury, but both these matches were lost.

Penrith's most recent finals campaign was in 2005 but it ended at the first hurdle.  The Rams had a disappointing year in 2007, finishing 6th in the Sydney AFL's 1st division.
