North Adelaide's Peter Anderson marks against Sturt at Prospect Oval in round 20 1967. In winning by 6 points in front of 16,650 spectators, the Roosters clinched the '67 minor premiership, but it would be the Double Blues who would have the last laugh, as they went on to lift the flag after an 11 point grand final victory over Port Adelaide. |

Fitzroy's Bernie 'Superboot' Quinlan flies high in an attempt to mark against North Melbourne. A superb kick and powerful mark, Quinlan was one of the VFL's most exciting, if unpredictable, key position forwards of the 1970s and '80s. Beginning with Footscray in 1969 he played 178 games and kicked 239 for the Bulldogs before crossing to Fitzroy in 1978. In 9 seasons with the Lions, Quinlan produced the best and most consistent form of his career, playing another 189 VFL games as well as adding 565 goals, including centuries in both 1983 and 1984. The highlight of his illustrious career came in 1981 when, aged 30, he tied for the Brownlow Medal with South Melbourne's Barry Round, who ironically happened to be a close personal friend of Quinlan's. |

South Adelaide's Lindsay Backman marks strongly during the 3rd quarter of a match against Sturt at Unley in 1968 before kicking truly to register one of his four goals for the term. South was seemingly in complete control at this stage, and lead by seven goals at three quarter time. However, there was to be a twist in the tale, as the match review reveals. |

South Melbourne players relax at lemon time during a match from the 1907 season. South reached the finals that year, beating Collingwood 12.10 (82) to 6.12 (48), but losing the premiership decider to Carlton by 5 points. Somewhat unusually for the time, all of the players in the photograph are wearing guernseys on which the sash is orientated in the same direction; such uniformity was not universally achieved until after World War One. |

Ralph Rogerson of East Perth effects a classic spoil against South Fremantle, whose Stan Badham (lower right) is about to feel the full, 90kg weight of Ray Giblett. Rogerson enjoyed the distinction of playing top level football in three states, with North Adelaide (SANFL), East Perth (WANFL) and Fitzroy (VFL). He also played carnival football for South Australia. |

August 1969, and hundreds of fans swarm onto Glenelg Oval to celebrate their hero 'Fred' Phillis' achievement in becoming the first SANFL player since Colin Churchett in 1951 to kick a century of goals in a season. Phillis ended up with 137 goals for the year, which at the time constituted a new league record. He went on to 'top the ton' on four more occasions. |

The Port Adelaide players take a break during the 1910 SAFL challenge final clash with Sturt which yielded the club's sixth senior premiership. Ninety-four years later, that tally has risen to thirty-five, the most recent of which was secured in this season's AFL grand final against Brisbane. Meanwhile closely related offshoot the Port Adelaide Magpies have claimed two premierships of their own since splitting off from the main club in 1997.
