In 1970, Roopena Football Club commenced at senior level in the WFL, having fielded three junior teams in 1968 and four the following year. With official colours of dark and light blue, and the Penny 'Roo as its emblem, the club took some time to find its feet, but since clinching its first flag in 1986 it has remained a power to be reckoned with. Roopena's sixth and most recent premiership win in 1997 was probably its most memorable as it coincided with similar success on the part of the reserves, under eighteens and under fifteens. These achievements were all the more satisfying in that the previous season had seen all four team lose their respective grand finals. In 2006 the 'Roos performed creditably to reach the grand final from 3rd place, only to lose to Centrals by 73 points. A year later they again fought their way through to a grand final clash with Centrals, but although they gave a somewhat better account of themselves than in 2006, the ultimate result was the same. In 2008 the 'Roos dropped to fourth. The 2009 season brought another grand final appearance and this time Roopena brought home the goods with an emphatic 16.15 (111) to 9.13 (67) defeat of West Whyalla. Where now? or
