Why is the team list shown 'back to front'?

For reasons which are unclear, South Australia has developed a number of football traditions which are at odds with the rest of Australia.  For example, in South Australia teams receive 2 premiership points per win, not 4, percentages are calculated differently, behind posts are - or were, until recently - painted red - and, as represented here, team lists start with the forwards rather than the backs.
