South Whyalla has been consistently successful over the years, with the 1940s and 1960s proving especially so. The club has produced many fine players, including Colin Herbert, Laurie Bade, Don Hewett and Mick Kelleher, all of whom won Whyalla News Medals as well as earning selection in the official WFL Team of the Century. Hewett later went on to greater fame with Glenelg. Between 1966 and 1968 the Demons were captain-coached by another man with a Glenelg connection in Harry Kernahan, who steered the side to the 1968 flag, having been a joint winner, along with team mate Paul Gloede, of the previous season's Whyalla News Medal. It has now been a long time between drinks for South supporters, with no senior flags to celebrate since 1994. Moreover, the 2006 season was one that everybody associated with the club will want to forget as quickly as possible with the five grades all succumbing to the wooden spoon, and winning a mere 3 games out of 85, which translates to a success rate of 3.5%, between them.
