New South Wales is probably unique among Australian states and territories in that, historically, the highest standard of football has not been played in the state capital, but in outlying regions such as the Riverina and Broken Hill.  Nevertheless, in the interests of consistency, it is the Sydney-based, ostensible state competition which is dealt with here, while you will find information about both the Broken Hill Football League (BHFL) and the various competitions which have existed in the Riverina in the New South Wales listings in the Other Leagues section.
