Formed:  1937, following the dissolution of the Ballarat-Wimmera Football League (BWFL) which had run for the previous three seasons, and in which the four member clubs of the Ballarat Football League (Ballarat, Ballarat Imperial, Golden Point and South Ballarat) and the four Wimmera District Football League clubs (Ararat, Horsham, Stawell and Warracknabeal) had participated.  The newly formed Wimmera Football League comprised the four former WDFL clubs together with Dimboola, Jeparit, Minyip, Murtoa and Nhill from the Mid Wimmera Football League (MWFL).

* The six team competition which ran in 1945 was known as the Wimmera Football Association and did not represent a full scale resumption of senior football in the Wimmera region.  Consequently, Warracknabeal's premiership cannot be regarded as 'official', and is not included in the following summary.  When the Wimmera Football League recommenced in 1946 it comprised ten clubs: Ararat, Dimboola, Horsham, Jeparit, Minyip, Murtoa, Nhill, Rupanyup, Stawell, and Warracknabeal.
